Cysts will resolve: Small cysts on the ovary are very common even in young women who do not have an iud. The overwhelming majority will resolve on their own without surgery. Although they may hurt the best treatment is to take Ibuprofen for the pain and to wait to see if it goes away. Usually obgyns will repeat the sonogram 6-8 weeks later to confirm the cyst has resolved.

Laparoscopy: Getting rid of a persistent ovarian cyst sometimes takes surgery. Fortunately, it can be removed by laparoscopy as an out-patient surgery. Taking out the Mirena (levonorgestrel) will probably not help resolve the cyst.

Progesterone only contraceptives work to prevent ovulation and the buildup of the uterine lining by causing a decrease in the estrogen levels in your body. Without the uterine lining, there is no menstrual flow (which is the sloughing of the uterine lining). New onset spotting may reflect a hormonal disturbance. Talk to your Dr.

Not really: Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud strings do not cause infection, nor have anything to do with an ovarian cyst. The ovary will creat a so called cyst for the ovulation process. Iud's do not cause infection , but sexual behavior can put you at risk for infection regardless of the prescence of iud.

Side effects: Chronic problems with your IUD can indicate that you are not tolerating this form of contraception. Talk to the Dr who placed it. They will have suggestions and may elect to remove it and suggest other forms of birth control.  Hopefully, the cystitis was treated and resolved. If not, talk to your Dr about a urinalysis and reflex culture.

Normal: About 10-12 women out of 100 will develop a cyst on an ovary when using the Mirena. Most of these cysts will disappear on their own in a month or two. Sometimes the cyst may cause some discomfort or pain, and occasionally this results in a need for surgery. Most likely this cyst will resolve on its own.

Removal of cyst wall: Without knowing the specifics of your cyst - typically, in order to prevent a pathologic (abnormal)cyst from recurring, one must have a laparoscopy to peel out the capsule ('wall') of the cyst, while leaving the overlying nl ovarian tissue in place. To drain a cyst-increases the chance it will recur.  Also-some cysts (usu. Small < 2.5cm) are normal, and their occurence monthly is part of nl cycles.
