Mastitis: You need to get in touch with your OB and let them know. It is not uncommon with breast feeding women to get blocked milk ducts - this can be very tender. If a secondary infection occurs due to the blocked ducts, this is called mastitis and may require antibiotics to treat. Don't delay, call your doctor and let them know what's going on.(There will be somebody on-call for them if it's after hours)

Inflamed milkducts: If you have inflamed milk ducts and are not breast feeding you should be evaluated by your doctor to make sure nothing more serious is not occuring.  This can be an early sign of a cancer or hormonal changes that need to be evaluated.

Difficult: It is impossible to guarantee that a breast mass is definitely due to a clogged milk duct. Any breast mass must be evaluated by your physician. An ultrasound of the breast may assist in making the diagnosis.  A clogged milk duct may lead to mastitis or a breast abscess so please see your md asap.

It : It sounds like you may be dealing with an infection, and what looked like milk to you may have been pus. It is not uncommon for women to experience a nipple abscess at any age. I suggest you schedule a visit with your primary care provider. After a history an exam, a diagnosis can be made. If it is infectious, then appropriate antibiotics will be started.

Galactorrhea: Men and women both have "milk ducts, " but a different hormonal environment leads to milk production in women only. Lactation is the true production of milk that occurs during pregnancy when Progesterone levels are high and stimulate maturation of the milk producing glands. Outside this setting, we worry about tumors and hormonal imbalances (prolactin) that lead to galactorrhea (nipple discharge).

Most experts do NOT: recommend breast self exams particularly at your age.  Virtually no one age 20 has breast cancer, but everyone feels lumps. Unless you have several close relatives with breast or ovarian cancer (indicating familial breast cancer risk) I would not do BSE. Consider mammogram at age 40 - expect guidelines may change before you get to be that old...

See your MD: Any breast mass or breast pain must be evaluated by your md. Don't presume that a breast mass or breast pain is a blocked milk duct. It is unlikely you are nursing at age 48 but not impossible.  You need a mammogram and ultrasound of the breast and examination by your healthcare provider for any complaint of breast pain, especially becasue it is only in one breast. Please don't delay !

Accepted Answer

Yes: Clogged milk ducts can cause painful hard areas on the breast.  To relieve them, try warm compresses, anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen or Naproxen and gentle massage. Continue to feed the baby.  Some lactation nurses recommend the supplement, lecithin, three times a day to improve milk flow through clogged ducts.
