my mri report says diffuse generalized neuroparenchymal atrophy and ex vacuo prominence of the sulci and ventricles. when i reviewed the scans with my neurologist, he said it's not clinically significant enough to be concerned. any thoughts?

: The MRI is consistent with brain atrophy, but in the absence of seeing the films themselves, not feasible to judge if more than would be expected for age.  The key significance would involve clinical correlation with cognitive compromise, if present (Is there Mild Cognitive Impairment?).  Maybe if memory issues, a neuropsychological test should be considered.

i went to the er because of a possible stroke. everything went fine but the doctor didnt explain any of my results to me. i was wondering what having a mild atrophy with associated increasing size of the lateral ventricles meant. thank you?

: Most likely at age 33 yrs., the "mild atrophy" does not represent a degenerative process but rather dehydration or artifactual imaging.  Best to discuss the interpretations with your regular doctor who knows you best.

: Certainly, the description of the MRI would support a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, but there are further radiological and even spinal fluid criteria, with the need to exclude other possibilities.  So, it may be important to add cervical spinal cord MRI, lumbar puncture, and several blood studies to confirm.  Find an experienced, seasoned neurologist to carry this evaluation to conclusion.

Shaking: If you are experiencing shaking on one leg during sleep with unremarkable MRI restless leg would be a likely.

hi, i have heart/chest pain after a prolonged period of starvation (7 weeks), no food ingested. could the left ventricle have atrophied? what would be the best way to re-strengthen the heart? cardiovascular exercise only, or is weight training safe?

Possibly: Ex vacuo is usually  ventricular enlargement due to decreased cerebral tissue. Usually asymptomatic, your acquired hydrocephalus and its underlying mechanism of traumatic brain injury are likely related to your symptoms. Please speak with your health care provider about symptomatic treatment.

Abnormal reading: The report describes mild atrophy which is nonspecific and could have been present for years, but maybe a sign of some dehydration or chronic degenerative situation.  First, go to the doctor who ordered this and have a lengthy discussion regarding why test was ordered and the next step now that films are finished.

See another cause: Men in their twenties may have mild cerebral atrophy from alcohol abuse, schizophrenia, birth injury, some other cause, or an overread by a radiologist. None of these will stop him from walking. Look for another explanation.

Brain atrophy: The description is consistant with diffuse brain atrophy, which can be just asymptomatic aging, but can be associated with dementias, chronic alcohol, multiple sclerosis, and a variety of degenerative neuronal causes.  Do you have issues with memory, focus, concentration, have you experienced repetitive head injuries, is there a family history of cognitive losses?  Ask neurologist the diagnosis.

34 yr old. ct scan from er revealed the following: "slight prominence of the csf spaces could represent premature atrophy." very scared! what do i do?

Accepted Answer

Don't worry : Just take it easy and as long as no symptoms this finding is ok.  A follow up later is ok in a few years if you are worried.
