A member asked:

Slight prominence of cerebral gyri & sulci noted. may represent mild atrophy. age 45. is that normal?

Abnormal reading: The report describes mild atrophy which is nonspecific and could have been present for years, but maybe a sign of some dehydration or chronic degenerative situation. First, go to the doctor who ordered this and have a lengthy discussion regarding why test was ordered and the next step now that films are finished.

Difficult to: say without looking at the scan and knowing your clinical picture. However, I do believe many radiologists overuse the "slight prominence..." phrase, when in fact the findings are in the normal range. Anytime I see the "slight prominence" statement I wince, and recall my old residency program chairman, who referred to it as an "Aunt Jemima" report....i.e. serving up a waffle.
