i was prescribed metronidazole for chlamydia, 1 dose of 2000mg/oral by my gyno oncologist. should i request azithromycin or doxycycline? i tested positive but am asymptomatic and don't want to risk the infection unknowingly lingering.

Odd treatment: I see no listing of metronidazole, a treatment for trichomonas &amp; some other conditions , that suggests it would kill the chlamydia germ. Please contact your treating doc(s) to clarify your diagnosis &amp; treatment.

Yes: This combination is used often especially in recurrent episodes or treatment resistant to a single or 2 drugs. Don;t stop anything unless you talk it over with your physician.

Chlamydia: The CDC guidelines for the treatment of Chlamydia  include antibiotics such as erythromycin, doxycline, azithromycin or ofloxacin. Erythromycin or amoxicillin are recommended during pregnancy. Usually see azithromycin or doxycline being used.  Metronidazole is not a good choice for tx of chlamydia.

Nope: Metronidazole is not effective against chlamydia. The recommended treatments are doxycycline (or other tetracycline) or azithromycin.

Not both: Metronidazole will often cure BV (bacterial vaginosis).  It is ineffective against chlamydia.  For this you will need a different antibiotic, such as azithromycin, doxycycline, eryhromycin, or uncommonly Levofloxacin and ofloxacin.  See your clinician for an appropriate prescription.

No: The medicines you took were not used to treat chamydia/gonorrhea but another vaginal infection. You probably nebver had the others.

It : It is ok to take both, but you might want to give your stomach at least a 20 minute rest in between the Azithromycin dose and the Metronidazole dose.  Both can cause stomach upset, so taking them together may make you feel pretty miserable.  Taking them with food or milk can help.  Good luck!  and remember not to have unprotected sex for 7 days after treatment and make sure your partner has been treated, too to prevent reinfection.  Good luck!

i took doxycycline for chlamydia treatment, became reinfected after a few weeks so took a second round of doxycycline. after completing this, my doctor prescribed metronidazole for bv. now experiencing a thin pale yellow discharge no smell - thrush?

: Vaginal yeast infection (thrush) can follow such broad spectrum antibiotic treatment. However, "thin pale yellow" discharge is not typical for yeast infection; the main symptoms is vulvar irritation and itching, with scant thick white discharge, if any discharge at all. Best to not make assumptions, but to check back with the doctor or clinic treating you. Good luck.
