A day or two: Actually, metronidazole doesn't usually react with alcohol at all. Most doctors have been taught that it does and tell patients to avoid alcohol because the combination can cause nausea an vomoting. But that advice is based on old, outdated research. it really isn't necessary. Alcohol in moderation for sure is safe 24 hours or more after taking metronidazole.

Topical alcohol ok: You can use topical alcohol (usually isopropol alcohol) when taking metronidazole.  Drinking alcohol can lead to a very unpleasant reaction.

You will regret it: Metronidazole can cause a rather unpleasant reaction from even small amounts of alcohol. Expect projectile vomiting, abdominal pain, chills and aches. Do not drink alcohol with the medication.

i had several sips of kombucha, which has a little alcohol, but i'm supposed to take metronidazole 500mg tonight. will this give me bad side effects?

How long between: when you took sips of alcohol and when you are scheduled to take Metronidazole?  Given the fact that there is only a small percentage of alcohol in kombucha, and that alcohol is metabolized relatively quickly, there should not be a problem, especially if you are taking them several hours apart.

Wait 4 days: Metronidazole interferes with breakdown of alcohol in the body. References stress waiting *at least* three days after your last metronidazole dose. I would suggest waiting longer simply because the side effects of the interaction are so violent and miserable - they include nausea, vomiting, headaches, flushing, and stomach cramps. I suggest waiting four days to be on the safe side.

24 HOURS: I tell all my patients who are taking metranidozole (flagyl) to avoid any alcohol while on the antibiotic and for at least 24 hours after the last dose.  This medicine, when mixed with alcohol, causes severe vomiting, so don't take any chances.  Good luck.
