Potentially: Protein has 4 calories/gram, the same as carbohydrate. If you ate enough protein in addition to other intake that was 3500 calories more than you burned off, you would gain a pound. Protein doesn't enter your system as protein, otherwise you would end up looking like what you ate. In addition, excessive protein intake is potentially harmful to the kidneys.

Dietary protein: You should get 1.2-1.5g/kg/day. It really depends on your nitrogen balance and kidney function. Protein metabolism is different for everyone and it has to do with those two variables: nitrogen balance and kidney function.

Fasting state.: When in a fasting state, the body first exhausts its carbohydrate stores and then dips into the fat stores.  Your body will eventually start scavenging your protein stores, but the timeframe of this is not relevant to the average human who is eating a few times daily.

It doesn't matter: You will gain weight when your caloric intake is greater than your caloric output (exercise).
