Peptic stricture: Esophageal stenosis (narrowing) from scar tissue (strictures) is of itself not painful.  However, depending upon how tightly narrowed the stricture may be, food can impact there (cause dysphagia).  Usually dysphagia occurs with meats, bread. Pain on swallowing (odynophagia) may result. If you have a peptic stricture please chew food well, take small bites swallowed with water & take acid blockers.

Not genetic/heredita: Commonest cause is from chronic reflux of stomach contents, causing inflammation, with scarring/narrowing. May be more common with hiatal hernia, and overweight-both can aggravate reflux of stomach contents into esophagus.

Typically no: Esophageal stricture is basaically a narrowing of your "food-pipe" that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. Depending on the severity of the stricture, most often ones feels that food is getting stuck as he/she swallow. Mild stricture often cause "stuck-sensation" with solid, large pieces of food. As it gets tighter, smaller pieces, even liquid can cause problem. Either way, consult doc!

See below: This can be found with either a barium swallow (x-ray while swallowing some oral contrast liquid) or a look down the esophagus with a flexible scope while sedated.  This is painless and easy to treat.  The most common cause is reflux, however, one of the main reasons to look is to ensure there is no cancer in the esophagus causing  the narrowing.

HopeNotATortillaChip: You should know by now. If it doesn't feel stuck, if there's no pain, if you're not regurgitating what you swallow then you're OK. Best to find out what caused that stricture; that would help estimate if or when it might recur. But if any of the above symptoms develop, especially if your whole chest starts to feel on fire, get to an ER pronto for a checkup (and your check).

Gastroenterology: You will need an upper endoscopy in order to confirm diagnosis and possibly have an esophageal dilatation if diagnosis confirmed. Talk to your doc if escalating your GERD therapy to a PPI would be appropriate in the interim and in the context of your detailed medical history, current medical conditions and meds and exam.

Swallowing problems: Esophageal strictures can occur anywhere along the length of the esophagus.  They can be caused by both benign or malignant conditions.  If you experience difficulty swallowing solids and liquids, have weight loss then you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
