Esophageal stricture: Strictures are very common & represent a fixed narrowing. When the esophagus is repeatedly inflammed, typically due to acid reflux, scar tissue may result. When the scar contracts, the esophagus stenoses (narrows). Strictures may also result from caustic ingestion, radiation treatments for cancer, surgical anastomoses, etc. Distinguish from dysmotilities or spasms (temporary muscle contractions).
