can you take bactroban (mupirocin) if you have a sulfa drug allergy?

Yes: Bactroban (mupirocin) is a topical medication for treating skin infections.  If you have an allergy to sulfa antibiotics, you should not have a problem with bactroban (mupirocin) which is not absorbed into your system and should not cause an allergic reaction in those with a sulfa antibiotic (which is absorbed).

Eczema treatment: If eczema is infected, it is often necessary to take oral antibiotics to help clear the exacerbation.

Fixed drug eruption?: Sorry to hear of this problem, but glad you're seeing a dermatologist. S/he is the best person to further evaluate the problem. Your question about allergy may be a clue. Certain medications can cause this sort of thing. "Burn" like and "seeping" suggest the kind of allergy called fixed drug eruption. Ask the dermatologist. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) probably won't help much.

i have a abscess in my nose , i was prescribed batrim oral and mupirocin topical. i dont know if i am allergic to sulfa drugs and im very scared to take it and have a bad reaction. how can i check if i am allergic without ingesting it ? or other dr?

Sulfa allergy: There is no way to check if you are allergic. Sulfa drugs are used a lot and the number of allergic reactions are small. If you are concerned, just use the Mupirocin.

after being on a picc line for drug invanz (ertapenem) and the more ab's (after a surgical inf.), i now have staph on my skin. mupirocin not working.i'm worried..

Complications: Surgical site infections are serious and frustrating, but they do occur. Sounds like you are being treated appropriately with the picc line and antibiotics. Recovery from surgery and then the infection is difficult. Take your vitamins, wash your skin with mild soap and rinse well. Use olive oil on your wet skin to moisturize it, then hairdryer the area. Stay in contact with your surgeon.

my infectious disease specialist has me on a decolonizing mrsa regime where i use mupirocin twice a day in my nose, armpits, and groin area for 2 months. i understand my sensitivity to medicine now. been using mupirocin at times before. is it okay?

: Yes, you should follow the instruction and give it a try, it won't harm you. However, recurrence is common by my experience.

i suffered from cold sore for a month. i went to doctor and he prescribed mupirocin cream for me. i am currently using this cream 3 times a day but my lips and skin around my mouth i very crackly since i used this medicine. can i use vaseline too?

???: Why do you still have a canker sore 1 month later?  If the same lesion is there you better return to doctor. For re-exam. Now yes you may use Vaseline for the dried lips works great

Topical antibiotic: It is a topical antibiotic.  In my practice it is particularly useful as it doesn't really have the risk of allergic contact dermatitis as does bacitracin, neosporin or other similar otc antibiotic treatments.
