IBS: Anticholinergic medications (dicyclomine, propantheline, belladonna, and hyoscyamine) taken about a half-hour before eating to control intestine muscle spasms, 
bisacodyl to treat constipation, 
loperamide to treat diarrhea, 
low doses of tricyclic antidepressants to help relieve intestinal pain, 
lubiprostone for constipation symptoms, 
rifaximin, an antibiotic.

IBS: I would recommend that you do a food dairy and see which foods you are allergic (ibs pts have allergies).  The most common are dairy and gluten.  You can try a to do a food elimination diet where you eliminate an entire food category for 1-2 weeks to see if you improve.  I would recommend a high strength probiotic of 80 billion.  For constipation i would recommend taking mag 500-1000 mg per night.

Not a question there: Brenda, not clear what you are asking.  You should have a physician if you have all of those diagnoses.  ER's are not good place to make complicated diagnoses except in emergencies.  Would strongly suggest that you consult your own physician as to what you can do to improve your symptoms and wellbeing.  If you are not satisfied, ask for a second opinion or a specialist referral.  Good luck!

: I'm not sure if these meds used to treat chronic constipation are as effective in IBS-C as some of the other prescription meds. I recommend consulting a gastroenterologist for best care and treatment advice.

Not typical of IBS: Typical symptoms of ibs include bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea, symptoms that are worse with stress, and improve with a bowel movement. Treatments include avoiding trigger foods, minimizing stress, getting regular physical activity and medications, which range from antidepressants to antispasmodics to probiotics.

Fiber: If you want to waste your money on herbal ibs treatments, try to pick some with a lot of fiber. Many herbs are drugs with little if any data to support their use, no fda oversight, no monitoring of side effects, no standardization and are sold to unsuspecting folks at huge mark-ups. You should see the profit margins on things like juice plus--i'd be ashamed to sell herbs in my office.

Depends...: It depends what variant of ibs you have. If due to sibo (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) then antibiotics like xifaxan (rifaximin) may help. If you're female with severe diarrhea-associated ibs, consider Lotronex under the prescriber's program. For constipation-variant disease, Amitiza & Linzess are effective & well-tolerated. Frequency, timing, & duration of symptoms? Bleeding? Sure you have ibs?
