my 34lb daughter was given a dose of 1 1/2 tsp twice daily of amoxicillin 400mg but 2 days later my 50lb daughter was given the dose of only 1tsp x2 of 400mg ?! seems off that my smaller child has the higher dosage?!

i went to the dr today and i was prescribed amoxicillin for the infection in my left year 
i was told to take one pill 3 times daily

Ear Infection: Patience. It is going to take more than one day to clear up the infection. Keep on your antibiotics, consider adding Flonase, mild valsalva maneuvers to relief pressure, ibuprofen and time.

Otitis media: The recommended dosage of clarithromycin to treat this condition is 500mg twice a day for adults of whatever size as prescribed by your doctor, reducing the dose might not be as effective or may take longer to treat the infection, and may not reduce the side effects too. This is appropriate: Appropriate dosing for amoxicillin in treating bacterial ear infections is up to 80 -100 mg per kilogram per day. At 38 pounds I most typically dose 9-10 ml per dose twice daily of the 400 mg/ 5 ml amoxicillin.  There is no increase in side effects but it offers improved coverage of resistant bacteria that cause ear infections.

one time dose of diflucan for yeast infection. very nauseas, how long do side effects last? also on amoxicillin for sinus infection. daily take meclizine and lamotrigine for seizures?

Prob Amoxicillin : Nausea from Diflucan uncommon. Amoxicillin much more likely to be responsible. Should resol within 1-2 days of stopping amoxicillin

Not necessarily: It is unlikely to hurt the child but may increase risk of sme side effects like diarrhea. Some infections require rather large doses while others do not.

GiveAHootDon'tPollut: What for?More is not necessarily better. But, then again, in specific cases it's given that way (e.g. before some dental procedures). Probably won't hurt, but it would be nice to know what's on your or your doctor's mind (if anything...). No sense in taking it that way if you don't need to. That would just lead to a higher chance of side effects, bacterial resistance and environmental pollution.

No: The extra medicine is not toxic to your child like it would be doubling up on a Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or other med with a narrow safety profile.There may be an increase in the risk of developing diarrhea at higher doses.

Accepted Answer

Oral amoxicillin: Very difficult to overdose on amoxicillin.  Penicillin derivatives have few toxicities other than allergic reactions (which are not dose dependent), and seizures may occur but only after reaching serum levels which are not achievable with oral administration.
