i think i am. experiencing a manic episode with the main symptoms being high levels of agitation and irritability. i have recently gone onto wellbutrin and can't get hold of my psychiatrist. what should i do?

Need care: If your psychiatrist is not available there should be someone covering for them -If worse after the wellbutin added stopping it may help, IF really cannot track your doc down seeing someone new , if you are feeling out of control, Suicidal or getting yourself into trouble the ER would be a good choice as inpatient treatment  is likely indicated. could i have bipolar disorder without the extreme actions during a manic episode? i have all the symptoms except for that. i don't know what's wrong.

Yes, you can: Bipolar ii disorder does not have extreme mania like bipolar i does.  Instead it has depressions and hypomanic episodes -- times of increased energy and less need for sleep, but less intense than full mania.  Usually there is no psychosis either, but there is still mood instability.  Please see a psychiatrist for a complete evaluation and treatment recommendations.

A state, not a trait: Introversion is a personality or trait variable — a way of describing a person's usual way of relating to the world.  Mania is a temporary state, not a trait.  A manic state overshadows personality variables.  Introverts and extraverts don't look different during a manic episode, and i'm not aware that introversion protects against mania or bipolar disorder.

See below...: Irritability, racing speech, little sleep with no apparent fatigue, poor judgment, increased risk-taking behavior, hypersexuality, delusions, hallucinations.  Other disorders often mistaken for teenage bipolar disorder include adhd, conduct disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd), schizophrenia.   A specialist, psychologist or psychiatrist, is best positioned to interpret such symptoms.

medication resistance is a very frustrating condition, but usually there is a solution that has not het been tried.  Again, talk with your psychiatrist, or get a second opinion at a university-based mood clinic, where the most cutting-edge treatments are available.  Brain stimulation techniques may be considered, as well, if appropriate.

Depression: It is very important for you to seek medical help. I would suggest you see a Psychiatrist. You may have depression, Bipolar disorder or even Schizophrenia. If you are not on treatment yet you need to be seen, diagnosed and treated effectively

Possibly: Of mania is severe enough, it can put the person at real risk of behaving in ways that are dangerous to the person or to others.  When that happens, hospitalization may be advisable while treatment is started.  Other times, families can create a safe environment at home that provides such protection.

Find a mental health: pro and let the pro ask a hundred questions to figure this out.   There are other conditions that contribute to mania.  Psychologists, MFT's, Psychiatrists are well-trained for just this task.   Let THEM do this if you have any doubts.   Self-help materials are often good, but the final decision ought to be guided by a pro.
