Drug-induced?: With drug-induced hypomania, the first step is stopping the drug thought to be causing it.  Often this is an antidepressant, given to someone who has undiagnosed bipolar disorder.  Steroid treatments for asthma is another possibility.  Antipsychotic medications like seroquel (quetiapine) may control symptoms.  If underlying bipolar disorder is suspected, ongoing mood stabilizers would be suggested.

Off Label Pill: Topamax (topiramate) isn’t approved as a standalone drug for weight loss. Moreover, you may experience drug-related side effects that can contribute to weight gain and not loss. Ask your doctor for more information.

Bipolar disorder: There are many types of medications used to treat bipolar disorder with both symptoms of mania and depression.  The treatment should be tailored to the patient's constellation of symptoms.  Lithium, antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines are among the medications used.

i am bipolar1. take saphris, (asenapine) lamictal and lithium. a dr. prescribed ultram for pain relief. could ultram cause mania or interact with my psych drugs?

Not big risk: Ultram increases serotonin like some antidepressants so it could be a trigger for mania, but if you're on lithium the risk of this is low. Almost all psych drugs are listed as "CNS depressants" meaning they can make you sleepy or reduce brain function in some people. As is Ultram. And adding another one increases the risk of sedation, but in a young otherwise healthy person the risk is low.

Manic episodes: The obvious way is to use "speed" (amphetamines) but this is illegal and ill-advised. In general, directly targeting "your manic side" is not a good idea because it puts you out of control. A healthy way to induce vibrance, vitality, energy is meditation. Much safer. No adverse side-effects. And it helps you to be who you really are and were meant to be.

Racing thoughts: Using drugs may result in racing thoughts and other feelings.  So using drugs apart from those prescribed may not be the wisest path.  Please discuss with your parents, or teacher, or pastor/minister/religious guidance, and see a doctor who can monitor and adjust medications.  Best wishes and good luck to you. As a psychiatrist: I try to avoid use of antidepressants in patient with manic depression due to the risk of flipping into mania, hypomania or a mixed state.

Protect your child: It is difficult to communicate with someone under the influence of drugs/alcohol, especially with a psych disorder. Your primary concern should be for the safety of you child obtaining full custody. Communication may be limited to a mediator such as lawyer or case manager if he is not receptive to you.

See doctor again: Maybe the marijuana that you use for "help" is the reason nothing else helps.  Nearly all bipolar patients can be helped with a combination of counseling and legitimate pharmacology. Mj is a remarkably psychoactive toxin causing many chronic mental health symptoms.  If, indeed, only mj has helped so far, then your doctor should be aware of this and work out a proper treatment plan with you.
