Mallet finger, or baseball finger, is a rupture of the extensor tendons that extend your distal interphalangeal joint. Age? Do you have osteoarthritis?The index finger and pinky have additional extensor muscles (extensor indicis and digiti minimi) that allow them to be moved independently of your other fingers.

3 months: These require full time splinting for 6-8 weeks and then part time splinting for an additional month. When i say full time i mean full time. If the splint comes off and the finger droops you start from scratch. The splint also has to stay dry. There are relativly minor injuries but can be a major headache.

It'll stay straight: It takes about 6 weeks for the torn end of the tendon to heal back to the bone. Treatment consists of splinting in extension for 6 wks. The splint must be worn at all times, if the finger becomes flexed at the last knuckle, the 6wks starts over! when the splint is removed, the finger should remain straight.

Mallet finger: I typically recommend 8 weeks of full time and 4/6 weeks of  night time and part time activity splinting on the distal joint only . You can work with a mallet finger that is splinted . Don't: If the mallet finger has not been treated, i would suggest getting an evaluation by a hand surgeon.  They can be treated with splints or surgical correction.
