m.christmas, based on brain mri nonspecific foci of t2/flair white matter, vocal cord paralysis and upper airway res syn and ms symptoms i was given tecfidera, is this medication safe to stay on for a long time?

Accepted Answer

Several issues: Vocal cord paralysis would not be caused by MS, and nonspecific white matter changes are NOT supportive of an MS diagnosis.  MS does not directly afflict the lung.  Is there something missing here, as otherwise, I cannot support this diagnosis.  If Tecfidera is justified, currently recommending Vumerity due to far less GI adverse events. (same immune effects as Tec.)

gbs diag3/11/13, ms symptoms, ascending pain from foot to hip, what causes ascending unilateral pain, pain medication not relieving pain.

Accepted Answer

Perhaps peripheral: The guillain-barre syndrome can cause nerves in the leg to be susceptible to local compression, and you may have a problem with nerve issues in foot or ankle but even more proximally, like hip or low back.  Does not really fit ms.  An EMG test might help.

hi, for the past month i have numbness on the left side cheek, mri showed scattered white matter frontal lobe. is this early sign of ms? i don't smoke or use recreational drugs or migraine. thanks?

: Have you seen a neurologist?  Your facial numbness is most likely a "sensory trigeminal neuralgia"  and maybe a consequence of a prior viral infection. : With out knowing which ms meds you are on cant help.Got to Drugs.com and enter all meds into the interaction checker including psilocybin.  Then discuss with your Drs.

i has ms and i take medicine for it. would i be able to have a child if i wanted to and still be on medication?

Possibly: I have a mom who has gone through 3 successful pregnancies with a similar setup. The SSRI is a category C drug during pregnancy with some but workable effects on some newborns.The Copaxone (glatiramer) is a category B with no negatives.You will need to have great family support and or a nanny to deal wit rambunctious kids, so be prepared.

need medication for ms and no way to pay, where do ya go and is there anyone that can help? have no insurance , do have a job but they say ya make too much to go on medicaid. is there anyone that can help  i can't afford to pay for it.

You : You have a few options. The first would be to contact your local county health facility and inquire about programs for people who have no insurance and are in need of treatment. Another option would be to contact the pharmaceutical company that manufactures the medication you need an inquire about any patient assistance programs. A long shot would be to research any ongoing clinical trials for ms and see if you are a candidate and then consider if this is an option for you. Good luck!

Clarity: Sorry, we do not have the cure for ms, but we can readily control the disorder.  All current medications on the market, control the entry of inflammatory cells into the brain and spinal  cord by a variety of mechanisms, so that damage to myelin is reduced.  Tysabri (natalizumab) is most successful, Gilenya a close second, and far less effective are interferons and copaxone.  Avonex is by far the least potent.

Typically NO: If a cystic lesion within brain, could be congenital arachnoid cyst, or even cysticercosis, and typically ms lesions not usually cystic.  Rarely, ms lesions may appear tumefactive, and may create a cystic appearance, but other lesions are present which tell the true situation.  Perhaps a visit to neurosurgeon could clear the confusion.

what are the symptom difference between fibromyalgia or ms?

Accepted Answer

Many: The symptoms of ms and fibromyalgia are usually quite different. Ms symptoms include eye inflammation, limb weakness and spasticity, various types of nerve pain, walking problems and problems with the bowels and bladder among others. Fibromyalgia is more of widespread pain problem without neurological findings.

can a "symptom" occuring when you have ms mean the same thing as you experiencing an "exacerbation?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily: By definition, a relapse means fairly abrupt new symptoms or recurrent symptoms lasting at least 24 hrs, which are not reversing or associated with contact with heat or infection.  Symptoms simply may fluctuate, and are merely an expression of underlying disorder.
