Many: The symptoms of ms and fibromyalgia are usually quite different. Ms symptoms include eye inflammation, limb weakness and spasticity, various types of nerve pain, walking problems and problems with the bowels and bladder among others. Fibromyalgia is more of widespread pain problem without neurological findings.

Very different: Fibromyalgia is a painful condition with areas of tenderness and trigger points scattered over all 4 quadrants of the body. Sleep disorder, stiffness, and cognitive changes may accompany. MS does not cause widespread pain, but does cause numbness, weakness, imbalance, loss of vision, fatigue, and cognitive issues. MRI films confirm diagnosis. MRI is normal in fibromyalgia, usually.

Can I ignore new symptoms if theyre on the "typical" list for fms?

Do not assume: Any new symptom that is not typical for you should be discussed with your physician. Since fibromyalgia shares many common symptoms with other medical conditions, you can not assume that a new symptom is caused by fms.

Fibromyalgia: Yes, the majority of cases of fibromyalgia can be turned around with the appropriate treatment program. This is not easy and not taught to the majority of our nation's doctors, but it is available. I treat these patients all the time and have a 85-90% success rate if they follow the protocols for fibromyalgia.

No: As far as we know, no. In fact it is not felt to shorten lifespan at all. However it is a painful condition with a variety of manifestations. Its severity can range from mild where people lead completely normal lives to severe where people are significantly disabled.
