Chemosis eyelids: Depending on the cause of swollen eyelids. Lack of sleep, post infection or trauma or surgery. Fluid retention. Each cause has a different prognosis and treatment. If painful swelling post surgery or injury must see an Ophthalmologist to rule out facial cellulitis.  So you see. From a benign condition to serious illness it is a wide spectrum. See your Doctor.

Eye swelling: Cold ice backs and low dose Benadryl (diphenhydramine) if needed will help. Consult with us if need stronger meds.

Urgent: This can be a facial cellulitis (skin infection) and that is an emergency. You should seek medical care immediately if you have not yet had medical care. If you are not under treatment the infection, if present, can spread to the veins leading to the brain.

Best to see doctor: This is a reaction or allergy to something. It seems severe that even your lips are swollen. Allergy can happen in most parts of your body including your airways and even intestine so it is best to be evaluated and treated as soon as possible to avoid complications or to take away offending factors if known.

Yes: surgical trauma to the delicate structures of the face, head, neck will swell (usually at a peak 3-5 days after surgery) and bruise. This is in part due to the fact that there is a hard bony under structure so swelling has only one way to go... out and laterally following the natural tissue planes. Ice, Ice, Ice and Ice some more.

SEE A DR!!!: Preferably a skin specialist. When you go, bring with you any meds, vitamins, herbs, pills of any sort that you have used in the past several weeks.

Preseptal cellulitis: is an infectious condition affecting the tissue around the eye. If not properly treated it can spread around to the eye and other surrounding tissue, causing limitations in eye movement and pain. Treatment starts with oral antibiotics, but may require iv antibiotics. You should be seen right away so proper diagnosis and treatment can be started. Good luck!

my 13 month old has a swollen eye from a bug bite. i gave him zyrtec about ten hours ago. the swelling hasnt gone down, can i give him benedrly too?

Yes: I would recommend seeing your PCP. The area around the eye may be prone to infection. If the insect bite is not infected, the local reaction may be controlled by a cool compress, and local application of Caladryl  lotion.  You may also use Aoral antihistamine such as Benadryl. The dose may be discussed with the pharmacy and your PCP.

Infants swollen Eye: Depending on the age of the infant...This can be worrisome( for newborns until perhaps 6 months) due to the types of infections, etc.
