Perhaps: There are many reasons for pleural thickening.  Visit with your doctor; a ct scan may be useful to find out why you have this thickening.

Many reasons: The pleura thicken for many reasons but most often due to infection or inflammation in the past.  That includes many forms of bacteria and virus.  The hyper aeration can be due to asthma such as that with allergies and even tobacco use amount others. It is best to talk to your doctor for more specific information

i had an asthma when i was a kid, last attack was 2009. every year i get an xray with no chest findings. this month it shows apical pleural thickening?

Get it checked: Asthma doesn't cause this problem. It can result from tuberculosis or from radiation treatments and some other problems none of which is typically good. This should be followed up on with a physician unless it is clear to you why it is present.

Final days: The patient should seek hospice care as this sounds like the disease is very advanced.  Hospice can make him comfortable.

If you have: previous chest X-rays to compare, that would be helpful in making the determination between mild pleural thickening(scarring) or effusion(fluid).  There are numerous potential etiologies for each.  Further imaging could include ultrasound, special chest xray views(decubitus views ), or CT scan.

Cough: In general, a symptom of coughing can first be addressed by over the counter measures. Cough specific syrups or tablets are readily available. Decongestant medicines can help if the cough is related to sinus drainage. Giving the cough ample time to clear is advisable (up to 6 weeks) but if you develop fevers, shortness of breath, chest pains, or bloody sputum, then it is time to see the doctor.

No, but: Apical pleural thickening would not lead to asthma but your symptoms sound like asthma.  A bronchodilator would very likely provide relief.  Some asthma is allergic in nature and you should try to be sure your sleeping area is immaculately clean. No dust or insects! sheets, mattress, curtains, carpet should all be laundered.

Rarer finding: Fibrocystic changed in apices of lungs common pulmonary manifestation of ankylosing spondylitis. Pleural and pericardial effusions are less common. Effusions usually respond to steroid therapy if they do not clear spontaneously. AS is inflammatory  disease with not uncommon apical fibrocystic  lung disease.
