Not: At baseline, boxing or pugilistic sports are not by their nature safe. That said, ability to box at baseline level of unsafe after surgery depends greatly on reason for and type of surgery. You should discuss return to activities and expectations with your surgeon.

Depends: A lot depends on the procedure done, the approach used, the immediate post op care, and the patients condition going into the procedure. In general, open procedures take 6-8 weeks to recover, and minimally invasive procedures 4-6 weeks.

Depends: Lung surgery is done for a variety of conditions, including cancer. The specific type of problem needs to be described before knowing what the procedure is, and what to expect from the results. Generally speaking, you wait for the pathology results to see how things went.

Depends: Depends on the surgery. For instance, if it was a resection for cancer, the pathology results will take several days.

No: In general surgery should be postponed until you have been afebrile for 48-72 hours and are on the road to recovery.  Lung surgery should not be done while a patient is ill with acute bronchitis or flares of chronic bronchitis due to an increased risk of postoperative complications.

if i get bronchitis every few weeks, will i eventually need lung surgery?

Accepted Answer

No: No you will not.  There are patients that are susceptible to recurrent bronchitis for a number of reasons (ie active smokers, patients with structural lung disease like bronchiectasis, patients with immunodeficiencies).  It is best to see a lung specialist (pulmonologist) if you are having recurrent bronchitis to make sure there is nothing else going on.  Surgery is unlikely.

i just had lung surgery for removal of blebs. how long till the feeling goes back to normal?

Variable: Difficult question that is best answered by your thoracic surgeon.  The recovery greatly depends on the technique/s used.  Vats? Thorocotomy? What is your body shape, i.e. How much space between your ribs? Talc used? Pleural abrasion? Pleurectomy? Etc...  In general, deep breathing spyrometer and stretching exercise under surgeon guidance helps.  The numbness can take 6wks to months.

LVRS: Lung volume reduction surgery is the removal of the least compliant and least functioning part of the lung surgically to allow the more normal lung that was compressed to expand. This would have the same theory as that of bullectomy in bullous emphysema.

Possibly: Chest surgery, either traditional or minimally invasive, requires going between the ribs. This can cause pressure on the intercostal nerves, which lie under each rib. That injury can last for months to years. Most times, it resolves quickly without any problems.

Welcome: No obvious reason why you can not fly, but talk to your gp who knows your medical condition to discuss risks.
