Depends: Hi. There's no absolute right level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-D) in the blood. My personal goal for patients is to be at or above the mid-30's. It's estimated that you raise 25-D by about 6 for every 1,000 units of oral vitamin D you take. Therefore, based on how low you are, that helps you estimate a reasonable amount to take. Good luck!

Several things maybe: Vitamin d levels have been the subject of lots of discussion. No question it is more than just a vitamin as it has some almost hormone like effects in some body processes.The exact effects of low levels, especially for specific signs/symptoms are unclear. Some say bone pain, increased risk of infection, etc.It has been associated with increased risk of hip fracture though.2000 iu a day okay dose.

Vitamin D level: Yes, 28 is low if measured by the usual lab range beginning at 30.  Please do what your doctor says but the experts on vitamin D research suggest between 50 and 80 for a lab reading.  Some docs are not familiar w/that and when they see it 30 and above say it is ok. Vitamin D: Low vitamin d it is below about 20. Research shows that raising your vitamin d level can boost immunity, elevate mood, and more.  The darker your skin, the lower vitamin d can be because we make it through the sun on our skin.  About 60% of whites in us are low, about 75% latino low, and maybe 85-90% african americans low.  Experts say between 50-80 is optimal. 20s or 30s is minimal.

Yes 12 is: Deficient. Associated with obesity. Chronic pain.  Anxiety depression and insomnia. Would have your doc prescribe vit d 50k per week for a few months or simply take VitD3 over the counter 1000-3000 IU daily

Easiest.: Take 2000iu per day as vitamin d3.  Getting more sunlight is important, but you age skin and increase skin  cancer rates!

Lack of sun exposure: Lack of sun exposure is a major cause of low vitamin d level especially if you live in the northern us. Less likely would be lack of vitamin d in food, but also a possibility if you are on a very restrictive diet.

Take more!: I have no idea how much vit d you are taking but most adults need to take 5-8, 000 iu/day to achieve optimal levels and if you're low it is safe and reasonable to try 10, 000 iu/day. Only take d3, not d2. It's best to take with 5-10, 000 iu of vit a and 1 mg of vit k too as they work as a team. Monitor treatment: Vitamin d deficiency is exceedingly common and even occurs in the southern latitudes with good sun exposure.   Supplemental vitamin d3 is the best way, as well as prudent skin exposure to sunlight.   Monitoring the vitamin d level is really the only way to know if current dosing is optimal.  As dosing varies so much among individuals monitoring is key to success.
