Atrophy: 'volume loss' means that the brain has a smaller overall volume than normal. This is usually due to atrophy, which can be caused by small vessel atherosclerotic disease, alcohol intake, drug abuse, or a combination of the above.

MRI: Routine MRI can&#x27;t assess function per se.  Functional MRI(fMRI) is a technique that assesses brain function by measuring changes in blood flow to brain stuctures.  However, fMRI is not in widespread clinical use, and is mostly in the research/experimental realm at this juncture.

had a brain mri and found poor gray white matter (24%), black holes 47%, and hippocampus 87%. radiologist said ok. should i get another opinion as a 45 year old woman with memory loss, hand tremors, off balance?

Confer: I suggest you review with your doctor and discuss why the radiologist review does not make sense to you.  If you are still not satisfied then get a second opinion from a different neurologist.

See neurologist : While matters changes on brain imaging is part of the diagnosis of MS, but can well have other causes. You did not mention any of the visual, balance, coordination symptoms that generally begin the diagnostic work up. Diagnosing from an MRI itself is it good medicine. If you have concerns on their significance, see a neurologist for an exam and correct diagnosis.

Brain mass loss: This means that some areas of brain  functions may be lost. Your neurologist will be able to tell you more about this. Hang in there.

Tough to answer: First the brain itself is fatty tissue. Second, the only fatty tumors are lipomas and liposarcomas, neither of which is found inside the skull (or very, very, very rarely). So get her doctor to give you a more precise ("medical") description and explanation of what that mans functionally.

Link?: Memory lapse...Mri showing poor circulation?  Doesn't sound linked.  Plain mris don't really show "poor circulation" as such.  Could you have had transient global amnesia?  Consider seeing a neurologist if you had a prolonged period of amnesia.

Head pain: If a brain mri was normal eight months ago, that is somewhat reassuring. If you note a tender spot on the right side of your scalp, you may be dealing with neuralgia which is an irritability/mild inflammation of a superficial scalp nerve. I recommend that you consult a neurologist if symptoms don't resolve.

a friend of mine has had a moderate loss of smell for several years with no other symptoms. an mri revealed a small abnormal spot on the brain. any ideas what this could be? thanks?

Accepted Answer

: The "spot on the brain" may or may not correlate, depending on location and character.  One consideration is an olfactory groove meningioma, but a chronic sinus problem or other issues with base of skull might be considered.  Need to discuss all of this with your doctor.

eeg&mri tests4 seizures.result neg.so what's split-second loss of consc.,falling 4ward&muscles very tense,brain feels 'shaken'.just had this1st time.

You may have one: Despite the fact that the EEG and MRI were negative you still may have a seizure. A Neurologist would be the M.D. to better help you with that situation.
