why am i having loose stools when eating salad?

Loose stools: You can get loose stools if your salad is contaminated. Also since salad is full of fiber, it can lead to loose stools.

Stools that are black: Green	Food may be moving through the large intestine too quickly, such as due to diarrhea. As a result, bile doesn't have time to break down completely.	Green leafy vegetables, green food coloring, such as in flavored drink mixes or ice pops, iron supplements.
Light-colored, white or clay-colored	A lack of bile in stool. This may indicate a bile duct obstruction.	Certain medications, such as large doses of bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate, Pepto-Bismol) and other anti-diarrheal drugs.

Yes: Cruciferous vegetables e.G cauliflower, broccoli etc, as well as beans are a common cause of bloating ; gas. Norovirus usually results in fever, chills, intense nausea ; vomiting with profuse watery diarrhea.

YES: Salad is uncooked vegetable with high fiber. It draws fluid from the intestinal wall into the lumen. Sometimes too much salad intake can cause diarrhea, and you would see undigested salad in the stool.

Not always: Generally loose stools mean that things are moving relatively quickly through your intestines, which water and salad would encourage.700mg of vit. C is unlikely to affect this. Conversely, hard dense stool has spent a long time transiting the intestines.  In general, it is healthier to have food and waste move quickly thru the GI tract than linger too long, so loose stools are often not a problem.

This is most commonly cause by viral infections, but occassionally bacteria or parasites are the cause.  People who have had previous abdominal surgery, especially of the digestive tract, should seek medical attention.

Post meal bm's: When food enters our stomach, as part of the digestive process, intestinal muscles are set in motion to move food along(gastrocolic reflex). In some people this reflex is hyperactive causing urgent need for a BM which is very loose. Certain foods or irritable bowel syndrome can also cause this. Taking a medication like dicyclomine an hour before meals can slow this reflex. Discuss with his MD.

Intestine infection?: A simple tummy ache with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, may be from a virus or bacteria infection, contaminated food, etc...  A normal person, not on medications, usually recovers easily. Taking a Pedialyte popsicle hourly, plus eating little else for 1 day, may settle things down. Sometimes a doctor's exam and stool tests for norovirus, Giardia, bacteria (S,S,C,Y), etc., are needed.
