Yes, in a small: minority of cases, stones can form in the common duct, which connects the liver to duodenum.  If you are having symptoms, you should see a doctor for full exam and tests.  It could still be some other problem too.

Time and discussion: You had a cholecystectomy.  The SGPT level may vary according to how recent the surgery was performed.  Talk to your surgeon to see if an intrahepatic cholangiogram was performed and if stones were noted.  Your surgeon will want to follow with you as she recovers.

Yes: Unfortunately once you have symptoms, you are at risk for future symptoms and possibly more serious complications.  There are no reliable methods of removing the stones so the recommendation once a stone(s) is symptomatic, is cholecystectomy or gallbladder removal.  Since this can be done laparoscopically, it is essentially a same day (23 hour) procedure.

i'm 48 and had a gallstone stuck in the bile duct which got recently removed and i'm now free of all symptoms. the removal of duct stone essentially cures the acute or chronic cholestasis and prevents any permanent damage to the liver, right?

: Yes, liver tissues have good regenerative capacity. You should not suffer any long term consequences from that episode of acute biliary obstruction.

4 weeks post laproscopic gallbladder removal and having moderate pain in my abdomen. left side upper deeper pain... pancreatitis? kidney stones?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Unless you have a history of prior pancreatitis, it would not likely occur now (4 weeks after surgery). You may have gastritis from narcotic pain medication, constipation, etc, also, the  sudden onset of kidney stones would be unlikely as well, unless you have a history of them. Call and see your surgeon for an evaluation.

gallbladder removed 3/6/23 (no stones but operating at 15%). before the removal my liver enzymes had been slowly increasing and are now alt 193 ast 133 bilirubin 0.6. ct scan a few days ago was normal as was previous ultrasound. should i be worried?

: Liver enzymes go up with any inflammation in the body. If they are trending down over the next 4-6 weeks, that is a good sign they will likely normalize. You should avoid alcohol while they are still elevated. Continue to see your doctor so they can be repeated in a few weeks. If they are not trending down, see a liver specialist. Good luck!

Diet,cholecystectomy: Low fat diet is the usual recommendation for fatty liver and to avoid pain from gallbladder contractions. But a prolonged period of fasting or or severe dieting leads to lack of emptying of the gallbladder which leads to stasis of bile and gallstones. You need to be on a strict diet to lose weight to reverse fatty liver changes ( primary indication for liver transplant in usa) . Get the gb out.

No: Although it is possible to form stones in the bile ducts of your liver, this is very very rare.

No: Stones are often found in the gallbladder which is downstream from the liver.

Accepted Answer

ERCP: Stones may form within intrahepatic bile ducts that are present within the liver.  An ERCP is an endoscopic procedure that can sometimes remove these stones.  If unsuccessful, surgery may be warranted.
