Fat distribution: This is very rare and both parents are typically carriers. The tissue under the skin has almost no fat under it. Instead, fat accumulates inside muscles, liver, heart. Triglycerides get very high and patients are resistant to insulin.  Kids may develop early pubic hair and get diabetes. There are many more details. This condition is very serious.

No.: A lipoma is a benign (usually harmless) tumor, surrounded by a distinct membrane.  Lipodystrophy is unrelated, and one does not lead to the other.

Abdomen, not stomach: If by "stomach" you're referring to the organ that digests food, the answer is no.  But lipodystrophy can include abdominal fat accumulation (build-up of fat within the abdomen), which can cause abdominal distension and discomfort, and which may also increase the risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

Lipodystrophy: This is an abnormality in fat distribution caused by any number of things. Sometimes it's an inherited disorder in families. In other cases, it may result from HIV or AIDs. It can be quite troubling to patients and often they might need professional help. Plastic surgeons have a number of tools to help. Infectious Disease doctors may also be able to help, particularly if HIV/AIDs is the cause.

my son was born with lipodystrophy displasia twelve years ago.  not much was known then. is there any information  you can give me now?

New genes...: Does your son have mandibuloacral dysplasia with lipodystrophy? If so, within the last ten years, mutations in two genes (lmna and zmpste24) have been discovered in these patients. No new treatments as of yet based on these discoveries. May be worthwhile to talk with a geneticist for the most up to date information. If this is not your son's disease, i apologize.

Several options: If the fat is inside the abdomen, that qualifies.  If the fat is under the skin (the pincheable kind), it's not lipodystrophy.  Diet, exercise, and weight loss can help.  Make sure you're not diabetic, your triglycerides are normal, and you're on up-to-date HIV meds.  Surgery can help with neck fat.  Egrifta (tesamorelin) (tesamoralin) reduces belly fat, but it's expensive and only works while you're taking it.

Now rare.: Hiv facial wasting is thought to be caused by some of the older HIV drugs, such as d4t and azt (zidovudine). Since those drugs are no longer routinely used, facial atrophy is rarely seen these days. To answer your question, it usually became visible a few months after the drugs were started.

Not much: Lipodystrophy can be one of the disturbing complications of HIV disease and/or its treatment.  For disfiguring manifestations of this would consult with a plastic surgeon.  Several of my patients have undergone liposuction.  Egrifta, (tesamorelin) approved in nov 2010 has been somewhat effective as well.
