Pain generator: The bulging discs may not necessariliy be the cause of your symptoms, and best to reassess what might be occurring here.  A good osteopathic physician, skilled at omt, might help both diagnostically and therapeutically.  Consider facet impingement, sacro-iliac dysfnctn, and even strain/sprain issues.

Disc pain varies: Sounds like you had epidural injection for pain relief of disc degeneration or protrusion. These are usually done in sets of three to see if get relief. Sometimes these disc problems burn out with time. If relief can be obtained with conservative measures rather than surgery, that's the  best alternative. Surgery can have its own complications. Physical therapy for disc problems may be helpful.

Epidural injection: You should take it easy the day of the injection.  The steroid injection takes a few days to be effective.

Depends: There's many different type of injections and different type injection could use different mixture of medication. I believe your doctor will determine the type injection is appropriate for you or not. You can ask this same question to the doctor who performed those injection on you.

See Neurosurgeon: If the symptoms of disc herniation have improved over the initial 3 months post-onset, and are continuing to improve after epidural, then typically no surgery is necessary. Have a neurosurgeon to look at your MRI.

Herniated disc: Surgery is not the only option. Physical therapy, chiropractic care, aquatic therapy, transcutaneous electrical stimulation, cortisone injections, rhizotomy, bracing and a variety of medications including compound creams can relieve the pain without surgery. Microdiscectomy is the most common surgical procedure to repair a herniated lumbar disc. Fusion is performed when there is instability too.

i had an mri that shows mild degenerative changes at l4-l5 w/ broad based disc posterior protusion inoving l5 nerve root. would steriod injection help?
