my knee locks up at night it is so bad that it wakes me crying. i cannot get my knee to bend or move. its not swolen and usually better during day. i have been to a dr my x-ray was normal i took anti inflammatories. it does not work. what can it be?

Many causes possible: When people refer to the knee, it is always important to define what part of the knee is painful. An example in a young patient with inside or outside pain located in the “back of the knee” can have tendinitis of the hamstring or pes anserine tendons. Many other common sources of knee pain can exist with a normal x-Ray. Further physical exam by a musculoskeletal 
physician is strongly recommended

Potential damage.: Having your knee lock is not a "normal" phenomenon.  It is usually secondary to a mechanical blockage to motion in the knee.  The most common things that cause this are a meniscus tear and or an articular cartilage tear.  Forcing your knee through blocked motion could cause permanent damage.  Find a good local orthopaedic surgeon and get evaluated.

Mechanical symptoms: The most common causes are meniscal problems, arthritis(degenerative) or patellofemoral pain.  You should see a physician if these symptoms persist.

See below: This could be a tear of your meniscus which is a little sliver of cartilage that is both on the inside and outside of your knee. If it gets torn, the torn piece may move when you bend the knee and then prevent it from straightening out. You should see an orthopedist about this.

Kneecap subluxation: Sounds very much like patellar( kneecap) subluxation ( slipping in and out) of place.I would suggest seeing a board certified ors for evaluation . Initial treatment often involves strengthening the quadriceps muscle and patellar bracing.This easy 'slipping' suggests generalized hyper mobility and can affect other joints.Best of luck!

It needs attention: cannot say what you mean by locking. A minor muscle spasm OUTSIDE OF THE JOINT is not generaly serious. But locking usually means something in the joint is broken and gets worse with moveing.

Identify the cause: See an orthopedic surgeon or sports specialist.  The source of the locking must be identified to solve the problem.  Exam, x-rays, and possibly MRI may be needed.  Locking can occur as a result of loose bodies, meniscal tears, cartilage defects, arthritis, scar tissue, etc.  Each of these would be treated differently.
