Injury: Usually this is caused by either a meniscal tear or injury to the cartilage covering the bones of the knee joint.

Possibly: Osteochondritis dikseccans. A chip comes out of the back of the knee cap and forms a foreign body that can lock the joint. Also an old injury might. Needs x-ray.
