Chondromalacia: Painful grinding of the knees with bending is usually a sign of a condition known as patellar chondromalacia.  This refers to an irregular or rough cartilage surface of the kneecap.  Exercising to strengthen the thigh muscles is the best treatment.  Oral nsaid's such as Ibuprofen may help. Orthopaedic consult may be necessary to assist in treatment.

NO , you are : Fully functional , your arthritis is not crippling you , you don't need joint replacement  , there are specific indications including  failed medical management to replace a joint.  See your family doctor and get your arthritis  treated with medications , and weight management if needed.

Sure: Probably have chondromalacia patelli, inflamation under knee cap. Hurts more on stair and getting out of a low chair (like a car seat). Ice is a local anesthetic (decreases pain). Used after an activity that usually causes pain and swelling it can also decrease the swelling.

Mal alignment/chondo: Mal alignment is common in women . This means the knee cap doesn't track properly and u get excessive wear of the under surface of the knee cap due this & the cartilage under them begins 2 soften & then becomes rough and the irregular surface is the cause of the noise & pain . Noticed when the knees r loaded as in squatting, stairs, down
especially c an orthopedic surgeon.

See/talk to a doc: This may be patellofemoral syndrome, where altered biomechanics create abnormal tracking and "grinding" of the patella &amp; its cartilage when moving in the groove of the end of the femur. Inflamed: Something has become inflamed in the knee, especially if you feel warmth or see redness. Resting your knee and applying ice for 10 minutes three times daily will probably only help a little so i would plan on seeing your primary care physician. Some orthopedic offices have same day urgent appointments. The doctor will need to determine if it is a cartilage or tendon problem.

Osteoarthritis : I wonder if you are or were involved in a lot of contact sports in your youth.  Osteoarthritis or oa can cause the grinding symptoms that you are describing due to degeneration or breakdown of cartilage in the joint and loss of menisceal fluid that helps to lubricate the joints.  An x-ray would be helpful to get an idea of how your joint space looks and to look for osteophytes (bony overgrowths).

Knee injury: Yes, could be meniscal tear, fracture, loose body, acl/pcl tear. Check with orthopedic surgeon.
