Only if it has: Been prescribed. If you are not used to taking two mg, i usually would tell my patients to take 1mg. If it is someone else's, do not take it at all. If you were my patient i would have you take an extra0.5 mg of xanax (alprazolam) instead. You should really call your psychiatrist who i would hope is on call for you or has someone covering for directions. Also, discuss with him or her in advance what you shoulddo should the situation arise again. I like to have my patients have a contingency plan in advance. Mixing is bad: Your physician prescribed those medications with the intention of you taking only those medications. Both Xanax (alprazolam) and klonopin are in the same class of medications and could cause an overdose. Absolutely do not take those medications at the same time without your doctor knowing. This could result in death from respiratory depression secondary to benzodiazepine overdose.

i took 2 mg of klonopin for the first time as prescribed by my psychiatrist at about 10 pm tonight but havent been able to sleep and am having panic attack systems. is it safe to take 1 mg of xanax at this point?

: It is not a good idea to take both medicines at the same time. The Klonopin takes a bit longer to take effect but it lasts longer. Both medicines can decrease your respirations so it is not a good idea to take both since your respirations can slow to a dangerous level. You should wait a bit longer for the Klonopin to take effect and then if it is not helping, call your doctor. Good luck!

No, : No, i would not recommend that.  Medications such as benzodiazepines can decrease your respiratory rate so that you don't breathe as well.  Taking two different ones together, or even taking more than prescribed, could cause serious or even fatal consequences.

I do want you to know that both of these medications are highly addictive.  There are non-addictive alternatives for panic and anxiety that will not affect your respiratory drive.  Please consider asking your physician about these alternatives.

Bad idea: Mixing these medications increase sedation and drowsiness. Combination of these 3 drugs increases risk of CNS (central nervous system) depression, possible breathing crisis and death. See sleep disorders specialist (neurologist) for evaluation, diagnosis and proper treatment. Be safe and call your doctor.

Klonopin (clonazepam) lasts long: Klonopin is usually given twice a day. Xanax (alprazolam) is given 3-4 times a day. Klonopin has a longer half life (the ammount of time it take for you to get rid of half of the dose through metabolism / elimination) it is also easier to come off Klonopin through gradual dose reduction. There are other differences reported by some patients. (more euphoria with xanax).

No: Klonopin and Xanax (alprazolam) are both benzodiazepines (bzd) as are Valium and ativan. Bzd are very useful for initial treatment of anxiety. Unfortunately, they are also highly addictive and frequently abused because they can cause euphoria. They can also be very sedating. In combination with alcohol or in excess they can be fatal. Xanax (alprazolam) is the most addictive and most often abused.

Yes and no: Xanax (alprazolam) is a very short acting benzodiazepine and Klonopin is longer acting. Xanax (alprazolam) is much more addictive if used long term, but may act quicker. Neither is good long term as you develop tolerance meaning the same dose is no longer effective. It is better to fo find an antidepressant or a wide variety of other anti anxiety medications.
