Possible: Kittens may become infected from eating raw meat, catching rodents, etc.  It is less likely than getting it from a mature animal, but possible.

Culture: Kitten should be checked for MRSA by the vet. This bacteria can be contahious, especially to open wounds in kids.. Careful hand washing and antibacterial soap until cat is cultured.

Antihistamines: Two things: if she always coughs when around the kittens... Likely causing allergy. Second, try an antihistamine for when you expect her to be around the kittens.. If the cough is not present ... Likely an allergy to cats. Cats are more allogenic than dogs.

Ouch!: Even minor injury can cause back pain,There are many muscles in the back,  Stress or stretch one of them in the wrong way and the pain can stop you in your tracks.  Most of the time it's just a minor muscle strain  But the strain causes pain, the pain causes tension &amp; tension causes more pain.  It usually resolves w/ a few days of "taking it easy", OTC pain relievers, heat and gentle stretching.

Contact health dept.: In the US regional health departments keep rabies surveillance (wild animals) information to help focus their efforts. When there is none in the area they relax &amp; if it picks up they vaccinate more. This type of exposure sounds too minimal to worry, but a call to your local health department can clarify any regional data to support not getting a vaccine.

Cat allergy: Greetings. Yes, Allegra (fexofenadine) can be used regularly for a fixed allergic exposure. Other medications could be added as needed. Since he was allergy tested, was he highly allergic? Does he have asthma? Is he allergic to other triggers? All these questions are important to see what might be best. Even allergy shot desensitization may be helpful. Follow up with your Allergist if Allegra (fexofenadine) isn't working.

is it safe to have a kitten around a newborn?

Probably: If the kitten is healthy and not aggressive, it is not likely to cause problems to the baby.  However, the kitten should not be in the baby's crib or in really close contact.  Being in the house with the rest of the family is probably ok.
