Most of time: Generally high BUN and creatinine go hand in hand in bad kidneys(chronic kidney disease)., and bun/creat ratio is 10-15 to 1 , however if ratio >20 may indicate superimposed second cause like dehydration or bleeding in gut.

: No. A single cyst in the kidney would not alter kidney function. Solitary cysts are quite common.
If you your BUN and creatinine are abnormal if would be prudent to see a kidney doctor/nephrologist.

Sounds okay: Reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthies fall outside on either end. Take care of that kidney. If your physician isn't worried, you shouldn't be either.

Generally no: An elevated bun/creatinine ratio (>20) is usually suggestive of "dehydration" and improves with increased fluids.  Unless the patient with a kidney infection is also fluid depleted (due to vomiting or diminished fluid intake), the bun/creatinine is not excessively elevated in this setting.

i had bloodwork done on tuesday that came back with a bun/creatinine ratio of 23. all other tests were normal. on wednesday night i had a kidney stone attack. would that have raised my ratio?

Dehydration: Classically an increased BUN/Creat ratio reflects dehyration, which may also go along with kidney stones. Drinking water as a habit may help. Also always try to catch stones in urine for analysis.

Elevated BUN/creat: Probably nothing serious , just dehydration/ not drinking enough fluids, but with your complicated issues, call your Nephrologist for more detailed answer and possible further labs or evaluation.

Forget it: The formulas used to estimate kidney function from spot creatinines are actually anti-scientific. They include an adjustment for race "because black people are more muscular." Creatinine where you have it is fine. Be glad for good health and ignore this stuff

Neither : The BUN and creatinine are normal and the ratio is not important in your labs. The numbers are as good as they get. A good physical exam and history is needed to determine the cause of your ankle edema. The numbers don't point to kidney disease and  work up heart disease need to see your MD.

Diabetic nephropathy: B"sd kidney failure is marked by elevation of creatinine. Microalbumin is a sensitive test for early kidney changes seen in diabetes and hypertension.  Unless very high, standard albumin will be normal.  Fatty liver is of concern but not directly related.  To prevent progression of kidney disease 1. control of diabetes 2. blood pressure control 3. ACE or ARB agent.  Glad to discuss

: Something is wrong here. It's impossible to have both BUN that low (entirely normal) and creatinine that high (which would indicate advanced kidney failure). Confirm the lab results and then check back with your doctor.
