Joint: It is the temporal mandibular joint that can get inflamed or tight from biting down too hard on food or grinding your teeth at night that places it out of alignment that may be giving you the clicking sensation .If it starts to hurt you should have that evaluated.

TMD\TMJ: What you describe are some of the symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction commonly referred to as tmj. Take some otc pain medication such as advil, motrin, aleve (naproxen) or what you would normally take for a headache. Stay on soft diet, don't chew gum, apply warm moist heat to area ; give it a few days. See a dentist who can better examine you for causes ; treatment options.

Possible infection: Swelling of the tongue can happen from minor trauma when being bitten or from a blockage in the salivary glands that release saliva below the tongue.  Another possibility, since your jaw is sore, could be an infected tooth or inflamed tooth that never erupted.  Another possibility is muscle spasms of the jaw muscles not allowing you to open.  You should see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Muscle spasm/strain: If the teeth are fine, and  no possibility of a fracture in the jawbone then this sounds like a  muscle issue. Most often  related to clenching from stress or overuse from chewing. Your closing(&some opening) muscles  are subject to spasm and strain. Hot moist compresses on the outside of the mouth and warm water soaks inside will help. Ibuprofen 400-600 mg 4 times /day for 5-7 days. Soft diet.

Tmj: Usually those are symptomf on people thsth brux or clench teeth while sleeping. Tka some Ibuprofen and warm moist compresses on the affecred area will help to reduce the soreness.

my jaw has popped on occasion most of my life. recently started c-pap and full mask. when i wake up my jaw hurts and is out of socket. i have to open mouth very wide and then it pops back in. feedback?

Not yet: It may take some time to return to normal as the swelling goes down. Take an NSAID such as Ibuprofen (motrin) to alleviate the discomfort and apply warm compresses. If the pain continues longer than a week consider seeing a doctor.

TMJ: It sounds like 'classic' TMJ, but a severe case.  I recommend an ENT visit to examine the jaw for TMJ and also your ears and hearing to see if it's all related.  Might be something else, but a good head and neck exam should pinpoint the problem.

a few possibilities: Several possibilities - you may have an oral infection from a tooth or salivary gland, pharyngitis, TMJ flareup, a denture sore or even a local irritation from something scratchy you ate. Sounds soft tissue related.
