Could be bruxism: Or "teeth grinding" during the night. This may exacerbate or precipitate TMJ pain. You should see a dentist for an evaluation or preventative splint. In the meantime, over the counter splints are available at the pharmacy to wear at night and see if improvement occurs with this simple remedy.

Possible joint : It sounds like you may have a possible TMJ problem. The best way is to check with your dentist. Sometimes you grind at night (may be a sleep disturbance), but pain indicates something is wrong. If there is clicking or noise in the joints you may have a joint dysfunction and pain on palpation may indicate a ligament problem, but check with your dentist for help or a referral.

Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
