OPK or ultrasounds: If you have regular periods you can use an ovulation predictor kit (opk). Iui can be timed according to when your OPK goes positive. You can also have ultrasound scans to measure the size and number of follicles developing in your ovaries, which may be combined with blood tests to check your estrogen levels. If you have irregular cycles see a rei specialist.

No difference: The  egg may be fertile for up to 72 hrs after ovulation.  It may not be in the tube for some hours, either.  Stats not much different for before and after if sperm count is really good.

: If ovulation is documented by an "ovulation test", which measures a hormone produced just prior to ovulation, IUI can be attempted 2-4 days after a positive test.  At age 40, pregnancy rates are significantly reduced, so a sperm analysis, and other testing (FSH level) may predict likelihood of conception.  If not successful, other testing HSG (hysterosalpingogram) may be necessary.

Pregnancy testing: Urine pregnancy tests may indicate pregnancy as soon as day 12 post-ovulation. A positive test is always true, whereas a negative test is not necessarily negative, sometimes it is simply too soon.

doing an iui this month, so i wanted to start ovulation testing early not to miss the time. i had a high surge of lh (almost peak) on day 4 of the cycle. never ovulated that early before. following days it was low. what could cause such early surge?

: If your cycles are still "regular" (24-34 days apart) and an LH surge occurred on "day four" after the end of your previous cycle, and your physician is not using medication to ensure ovulation, this may happen (depending on length of your menstruation, "day four" could really be "day 9-10" if your period was five days long).

Ruptured cyst: It could be a ruptures corpus luteum, which should get better with time. If it gets worse, contact your GYN.

Definitely: That is definitely an ovulatory progesterone level. With clomiphene I wouldn't get too hung up on "how many," it is really only supposed to give you one or two follicles. It improves you chances of conceiving significantly anyway. Drugs such as hMG ("shots") will increase follicle number, but that's a whole 'other approach. good wishes and good luck.
