'feet up'/stockings: Support stockings and 'staying off your feet' will help ankle swelling (edema).  Remember: ankle edema is a sign of pre-eclampsia (old term=toxemia) so it is best to report edema to your OB and get seen for a blood pressure check and a urine check (for protein). Labour type?: How did you deliver?  Cesarean?  Vaginal deliver?  It may play a role sometimes due to stirrups against the feet in vaginal delivery.  Other than that, swelling can happen for a number of reasons but likely the stress from delivery and added weight (although not noticed during pregnancy) caused the swollen ankles.

You : You need to see a gynecologist immediately and have a complete examination including a pelvic exam.  You may need a blood pregnancy test which is more accurate.  Please be seen immediately and have a complete evaluation.  If you had worse pain, vomiting, fever, discharge or leakage then go to the er.

Edema of ankles: You should find a doctor to have your heart, kidneys and liver assessed for disease. You should also have your blood tested to see if you have any abnormal findings dealing with your heart and/or kidneys as well as looking your Albumin level. Having edema is not normal and you need to see a physician to find out what its cause(s) and treatment is(are). Do so quickly.

Could be: It could be osteoarthritis considering that it is at the end of the day, but it could be inflammatory such as rheumatoid in light of the swelling.

General rules: To affect the fetus any medication/drug must enter the bloodstream where it would then be carried to the fetus. None of the OTC creams or lotions have anything that penetrates the skin deep enough to enter the blood. A few of the prescription creams with specialized skin transfer drugs would be a problem, but you can discuss this with your doc.
