Edema of ankles: You should find a doctor to have your heart, kidneys and liver assessed for disease. You should also have your blood tested to see if you have any abnormal findings dealing with your heart and/or kidneys as well as looking your Albumin level. Having edema is not normal and you need to see a physician to find out what its cause(s) and treatment is(are). Do so quickly.

Do not ignore : Edema can be pitting or brawny. Press around the ankle firmly - hold and release. If there is a indentation that stays around it is pitting edema. If you can not dent the flesh it is brawny edema and much harder to deal with. Support hose, elevation, sequential compression, diuretic meds and decrease in salt are a good start. If this does not work pt specialized in lymph-edema can help.
