Yes: All the scales i know of that measure body fat do so by a priciple of electrical impedance. You usually have your feet on a "pad" that is metallic and a very small electrical current is sent from one pad to the other. Since electricity travels at different speeds through water, fat, bone and muscle it can calculate what percentage is fat. Totally harmless (except for the result!).

is losing weight safe during pregnancy if you're already overweight (bmi=30)? i had already started a healthy/balanced eating plan and exercise.

In the case: mention losing weight during the early part of pregnancy is not only safe but is TO BE DESIRED.  Careful observation by your OB-GYN and I would suggest a qualified NUTRITIONIST is a good idea!  Hope this is helpful!

i would avoid all drugs when trying to conceive

see endocrinologist of infertility specialist  to look for other causes of infertility as i won't blame it on weight.

Weight Gain: the Institutes of Medicine say that a woman with a normal BMI before pregnancy is recommended to gain 25-35 pounds during pregnancy.  Many physicains believe that the weight gain targets are too high, however.  It is always best to discuss personal targets with the individual doctor taking care of the patient.

It depends/unlikely,: This depends on how much weight is gained during pregnancy.  The average woman is expected to gain about 25 pounds during pregnancy and would likely still be overweight after it.  So it's normal to be overweight in pregnancy.  However, if the BMI was high normal before pregnancy it might be smart to have a diet and exercise program after the pregnancy.  Best of luck.

Wouldn't hurt: While your bmi is not obese it is above the normal range which can increase your risk for complications of pregnancy as well as decreased fertility. I would encourage you to adopt healthy lifestyle changes.
