Accepted Answer

Absolutely: This should be safe for you to do. This is actually something I recommend to a lot of my patients with allergies, especially if they have nighttime symptoms that stop them from sleeping. You might want to add OTC Flonase to your regimen as well if the antihistamines aren't cutting it for you.

Meds adjustment: You can take the same Claritin (loratadine) dose but space it out every other day instead of everyday if you have liver failure. If you have chronic liver disease but your liver functions well, Claritin (loratadine) can be taken as regular doses and frequency.

Not the best option: If true food allergy (antibody mediated), then second generation antihistamines (Loratadine, Zyrtec, Allegra) are of little benefit. Itching/hives from foods occur rapidly (usually within 30minutes and certainly within 2 hours) and disappear rapidly. First generation meds like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) work much more quickly. If other symptoms (breathing, dizziness, nausea), injected epi is critical. (see comment)

Yes.: Sedation and drowsiness may occur at this higher dose.

what is the difference between allegra (fexofenadine) and flonase for allergy relief -take one or both?

Accepted Answer

Flonase better: Allegra is an atihistamine and is helpful for itchiness, sneezing and a runny nose, not helpful for congestion.  Flonase, an intranasal steroid covers all these symptoms plus congestion. Head to head studies comparing Flonase to antihistamines, singulair, (montelukast) or sudafed showed that Flonase beat them all.  I usually suggest daily Flonase and adding an antihistamine on as needed or supplemental basis.

Accepted Answer

No problem: but do realize that the D in Claritin may raise your blood pressure and may not be good as a long-term medication.  Nasal steroid is usually more effective and safer in the long run.

Accepted Answer

Zyrtec (cetirizine): The effect of Flonase takes time to develop. The effect of anti-histamines like Zyrtec (cetirizine) are "immediate" and anti-histamines differ in effectiveness from person to person.

Yes.: Allegra (fexofenadine) and Ibuprofen together do not normally cause adverse drug reactions.  Allegra (fexofenadine) can be taken regularly safely for long periods. I always advise caution against taking Ibuprofen daily for long periods of time.

Claritin (loratadine) or Zyrtec: You can take Claritin (loratadine) or Zyrtec both are once a day and If too much congestion and you don't have High Boodl Pressure you can take Claritin (loratadine)D24/hours or Zyrtec D both once a day

i'm having severe itchy burning head from hair color allergy. can i take two loratadine tablets 10 milligram? one isn't helping very much

Accepted Answer

Worthless: there is no role for loratadine in treating this type of allergic reaction.  A physician needs to evaluate the reaction and treat appropriately.  If sure of the cause, the best otc medication would be topical hydrocortisone.  Step 1, of course, is to rinse away the hair dye as much as possible.
