i got new glasses the other day. i only need to wear when driving and doing work at the computer. yesterday i happened to have them on most of the day?

Glasses: Not a problem. I broke 5 pair at age 6 but did OK. At 71 my glasses are working just fine.
If you have them on and it is not troubling you - OK
If you don't have them on and it is not troubling you - OK.
If you do use glasses it is a good idea for the lenses to go dark if the sun is shining on you.

does riding a bus vs. driving cause more wear-and-tear? what about walking up steps w/ osteoarthritic knees?

Driving/riding bus/: Long question 
if you do not have any pathology in your lower extremities including knees, than it does not matter whether you drive or ride the bus.Knees can withstand wear and tear of either.If you have osteoarthritis of knees , you should clinb the stairs slowly, take your time one at a time holding on the rail so there is less strain on your knees.

how nearsighted should you be to wear glasses full time? i prefer to wear only when driving

Visual comfort.: If you see well enough to do the other activities you particpate in, then just use your glasses when you feel the need to see better. However, don't be "afraid" to wear glasses, and don't be vain about it to the extent you injure yourself doing somehting you could not see clearly.

i wear monovision contacts and lose some depth perception when driving. is it possible to wear glasses over the contacts to improve this when driving?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Glasses can be made with window glass over the distance eye and a correction for the near eye which renders it clear at distance.  This is commonly done and helpful when driving at night or in the rain.

been wearing glasses daily for yrs. prescription changed 2 x. was told to wear for driving only. they give me headaches when i wear them. tried several prescription and still the same. told to not wear them for driving. can vision improve as you age?

: Vision does not improve with age. If anything near vision becomes difficult and most people need reading glasses. It is not feasible to provide a more meaningful opinion without examining you and your eyeglasses.

: Yes, driving is permissible; however, it is advisable to stop at rest areas periodically to walk around and ensure good circulation in your legs.

can i wear an eye patch while driving to correct double vision?

Accepted Answer

Maybe: An eye patch will most definitely cure double vision caused by eye misalignment (binocular diplopia) but raises other issues regarding visual field and depth perception.  Most municipalities allow driving with only one eye - check locally and do what you feel safe with.  Hopefully, the problem is only temporary.

how common is double vision in limited circumstances? i am 70, male.  i am nearsighted, w/ an astigmatic correction, and wear glasses.  sometimes, when i have been driving all day, mostly at night, i get double vision--it seems like my eyes both look forw

Double : Double vision also referred to as diploplia. Double vision is the simultaneous perception of two images of one object, with one of the images being displaced. Double vision is usually an early sign of a more serious medical condition involving the neurologic or muscular systems, an auto immune disease, infectious processes, opthamological issues or cancer. 
Fatigue may rarely cause double vision, but not consistently.  It is crucial you see your doctor to investigate the double vision. Let your doctor know that you were already cleared by an opthamologist.

No: No.  You could wear the contact in the other eye only or your glasses.  Wearing the contact in the eye prior to complete ulcer resolution could result in permanent damage.

Uncomfortable: Night glare from a number of different conditions inside the eye can cause difficulty with vision making driving uncomfortable.  Check with your ophthalmologist to find out the cause of the glare and get it fixed.
