The range...: ...Of doses used is huge.  Further, when dealing with an herbal product like this, the same milligram dosage in two different brands might have vastly different amounts of active ingredient. Dosage has been relatively standardized in some countries, but not here.  Saw palmetto can be harmful in some conditions(bleeding disorders, liver problems etc.). Never take huge doses to "get in system fast.".

Not the same : Flomax (tamsulosin) is an fda approved medicine with known safety and efficacy. Saw palmetto has failed multiple controlled trials.  You're welcome to take it; most supplements have a 20% placebo effect.

Bladder emptying: Flomax (tamsulosin) allows the bladder to more complete empty when there is some dyfunction of even enlarged prostate slowing things down.  Without the medicine, you probably are not emptying as well.

Flomax (tamsulosin): Nocturia is but one symptom of bph.  I would be concerned that you are not emptying your bladder completely now that you have stopped the flomax (tamsulosin).  There also long-term consequences on bladder thickening and irritability as a result of stopping the flomax (tamsulosin).  See a urologist for further testing to determine how much you need the medication.  Your ophthalmologist likely only needed you to stop the medication to facilitate cataract surgery.

Maybe something else: You should see some improvement with Flomax (tamsulosin) within several days, in most cases. If you are not seeing any improvement, there may be something else going on other than BPH, such as a urethral stricture or some other cause for mechanical obstruction.  You should see a urologist for further evaluation.

Yes Taper.: Take one tablet starting now and ten wean to one every other day for 5 doses, then every 3 rd day for 5 doses and hen every 4 th day for 5 doses and then stop.
