hypoparathyroidism? my 27 year old symptom free daughters recent calcium was 8.4 and 8.6 is the cut off. her doctor mentioned hypopara thyroid disease and is testing it again along with her thyroid. reason to be concerned?

: Low calcium (hypocalcemia) due to hypoparathyroidism is not as common as high calcium (hypercalcemia) due to hyperparathyroidism. The diagnosis is easy with one simple blood test and treatment is also simple with calcium and vitamin D. However, if the PARATHYROID hormone is normal her doctor has to check for a condition called hypocalcemic hypercalciuria for which the treatment will be different.

if i only have one symptom of having a thyroid disease which is that my eyebrows have thinned out and don't grow back can i still have the thyroid ?

Not likely: That is not likely for a couple reasons. First, that symptom does not necessarily mean thyroid disease (hypo or hyper). Other conditions can cause eyebrow loss. Second, it is more likely you have other symptoms if you have something wrong with your thyroid. Regardless, it is easy to check for initially - a simple blood test.

Hyper vs hypo: Hyperthyroidism happens when your thyroid gland is over active. Hypothyroidism is when the gland is under active. Hyperthyroidism can result in increased metabolism, excessive sweating & rapid heart rate. Hypothyroidism can result in slowed metabolism, feeling cold & dry skin. This list is no where near conclusive. Consult your doctor if you feel that you have thyroid disease and get checked out.

You also mention "brain lesion" under your conditions. What are you referring to? Hyperthyroidism may cause hypermetabolic state and cause tachycardia or palpitation but not pressure. Have you been diagnosed with anxiety disorder? Not enough info for relevant reply

Almost a century: The old "protein bound iodine" assay dates to the early 1900's. I've seen both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism missed for years even when they were obvious. Patients typically got sent to the psychologist or social worker who mistakenly thought they'd been properly screened. Hopefully today's physicians are getting smarter. I trust your mom was finally diagnosed appropriately.

It depends: Usually people don't die acutely from thyroid disease and  if it a cancer, it will cause problems for long time before one dies.If you have high or low thyroid hormone levels, the symptoms will be there for long time before you experience serious symptoms. High or low heart beats, constipation or diarrhea, skin changes and heat /cold intolerance are common symptoms. Weight gain/loss as well.
