Yes. : Yes gum is safe .  Don't over do it. Brush frequently to avoid cavities.  Do not do xylitol gum as research is still undecided on safety during pregnancy and breast feeding.

Safe.: Xanthan gum is the product formed when lactose, sucrose or glucose is fermented by a bacteria known as xanthomonas campestris.  It has undergone extensive testing and is considere safe.

Pregnancy gingivitis: Swelling of the gums during pregnancy is called pregnancy gingivitis and is related to the increase in hormone levels during pregnancy. Your tissue is much more sensitive to irritation from plaque and calculus. See you dentist for evaluation and cleaning. Quickly: Gum disease is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted from person to person.  85% of people have it, but when pregnant, the problems gets worse as the pregnancy proceeds.  Look into something like the perio protect method to see if you can find a dentist that can help you while you are pregnant.  You don't have to wait for the baby to be born and maybe pass some of the bacteria along.

Hopfully never.: If you don't have anything irritating the gums, they normally wont swell up.  An abnormal swelling of your gums while you are pregnant is an over reaction of your body to an irritant, mainly dental plaque.  If you brush and floss well through out the pregnancy, you should not have any swelling.  If there is an irritant then around the end of the first trimester is when it begins.

Not really: Bleeding gums are signs of gum infection, hormonal changes such in pregnancy can affect the physiology of the gingival tissues but alone will not cause bleeding, a pregnanacy test is more accurate then having to wait for your gums to bleed,  if you are pregnant and have gum disease your gums will tend to bleed more. Please visit your dentist to treat your gum disease.
