ive recently been on antibiotics for bv. (cleo in, flagyl) results finally are negative for bv but no lactobacillus detected could i still have bv?

Accepted Answer

"BV" ?'s: Bacterial vaginosis is generally cleared by Cleocin and metronimidazole treatment.  The absence of detection of lactobacillus does not mean "BV" is still present.  Absence of a typical vaginal odor is a better gauge of the success of treatment.

uribel & lactobacillus gasseri pa safe to take 9 months post c-diff? i understand that uribel has an antibiotic in one of the ingredients. thankyou.

Should be OK: Uribel is an antispasmodic analgesic and not an antibiotic.  You should be fine.  Lactobacilli are very good replacement for bowel flora and may help to inhibit overgrowth of clostridium difficile.

what would cause low lactobacillus acidophilus levels in urine? havnt been on antibiotics since july. could yeast tablets like azo cause levl to drop?

Stool contamination: Normally there are no lactobacilli  in  the urine. If there are low levels in a stool sample that could be due to antibiotics. If you are eating 6 servings of organic fresh vegetables and 1 apple a  day and  eating a little yogurt each day you should have good bacteria in your GI tract.  Cystectomy is very unusual at age 13. Dilitation and curettage could introduce stool bacteria into urine.

Accepted Answer

No treatment needed: Lactobacillus is normal in the genital tract and can easily get into the urine and show up on culture. It's almost certainly not hte cause of your UTI and does not need treatment. Also, you NEVER want to treat vaginal lactobacillus with antibiotics. Lacto is very important to vaginal health; getting rid of it causes bacterial vaginosis and increases risk of other infections, including STDs.

Accepted Answer

Doubtful: Lactobacillus is an unusual bacteria for a bladder infection.    It is a typical bacteria of the vagina, so this most likely represents a contaminated urine sample.

NO: No studies to suggest it even works, that i know off. I am sure our gyn docs will also give their opinion on this one.

why are streptococcus and lactobacillus so important to humans?

Accepted Answer

They really aren't: Strep bacteria often hurt us, causing heart infections, rheumatic fever, tooth decay, and soft tissue infections. If you get involved with cults about stool microbes, they'll tell you that you need to eat special foods loaded with these microbes or your normal body flora and overall health will be ruined. This isn't my focus, but most of these claims seem overstated to me.

can i take lactobacillus acidophilus at the same time with my prescriptions?

Accepted Answer

Yes,but not together: The only prescriptions that might interfere with acidophilus are antibiotics, but being on  antibiotics is when we need probiotics the most! if on antibiotics take a high potency probiotic, at least 20 billion, and take at least a couple hours away from antibiotics. I also advise taking sacchromyces boulardii, a probiotic yeast, if you are on antibiotics- this can be taken at the same time.

Stonyfield,Culturele: If you really want the benefits of lactobacillus acidophilus i advise taking it as a supplement, as most yogurts have little if any live cultures. Health Food Stores &: Any store that sells "health foods" will carry lactobacillus acidophilus. Certain brands like culturelle are also widely sold at pharmacies.
