Overdo: In theory; but it s not indicated (off label) and  hard to justify the risks involved (agranulocytosis, seizures, death) not to mention the monitoring required. It should not be an alternative.

Yes but: It can cause a lot of side effects. It would be appropriate if you have schizophrenia or bipolar disorder schizoaffective disorder to be on it. However for other types of mental illness related insomnia it's probably not the best idea. The weight gain can be significant, there are elevated prolactin levels, a high risk of diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and a risk of tardiva dyskinesia.

Most sleeping pills are designed for sparingly little use. Many become ineffective with chronic use and are addictive as well.  Using too many pills for sleep can lead to an obsession about the fear of not falling asleep. 
There are natural ways to retrain your brain to sleep.

There is no #1: cause for insomnia.  Alcohol, caffeine &amp; other stimulants can keep one awake. Exercising or eating a meal too close to bedtime. Too much light in a room or a room that is too hot or too cold are other causes. Fretting anxiously when on lies down keeps the brain overly stimulated. Noise is a problem. Many medications can cause sedation. etc, etc, etc. Uses good sleep hygiene.

Second improve sleep hygiene behavior (see link in comments section). if it is determined that insomnia is not due to a medical condition and simple steps toward better sleep hygeine do help, recommend seeing a therapist who specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia - highly effective.

Consider: Have a darkened , quiet room, consider a sleep mask, comfortable temperature and, if no contraindications, many find 250-500 mg of magnesium may be helpful.
