i am 1 week post op from jaw surgery for 2 fractures and having bad pain in my jaw and ear making it impossible to sleep.  what should i do?

Pain Control: It is common to experience pain or pressure in or around your jaw joint and earache after jaw surgery. This pain will usually disappear within 2-3 weeks. If the pain medication is not taking the pain away, call your surgeon and request an anti-inflammatory medication prescription. Alternate the opioid medication with NSAIDs every 4-6 hours. Get well soon.

Under certain conditions, there are surgical procedures that are used in conjunction with conventional orthodontics.

could jaw surgery make my neck look longer?

No vertical length: When you get a jaw surgery that advances the lower jaw forward, it can make the "chin to throat distance" longer and enhance the appearance of a tight neck, long jaw line, and the youthful look.  This may also give the appearance of a longer neck, but this does not make the neck vertically longer.  That would require making you taller in the cervical spine and i'm not aware of such a surgery.

what to do for swelling after corrective jaw surgery?

Natural process: The good news is that area has fantastic blood supply and so healing will occur rapidly. Inflammation (red, hot, tender swelling) is the body increasing the blood flow to the injury to bring healing factors to the area and also the veins expand to carry bad stuff away. Dressings and ointments are of no value there. Avoid further trauma to the area and let nature take it's course. Motrin/advil help.

Your surgeon who will be performing your surgery is the one you should discuss your concerns with and provide you with more information on what to expect and to hopefully assure you of your safety in the hospital
