This procedure is: done quite often by general surgeons.  it is best to discuss the risks and benefits of any procedure with the surgeon doing the procedure.  typically any time there is a foreign element introduced in the body it does have the risk to become infected.

what is involved with mesh removal after inguinal hernia?

Hard work: Mesh placed for a hernia repair may need to be removed , either for infection, intractable post op pain of an extended period, or for hernia recurrence.  In the latter, the graft should be left in place , and repaired with another adjacent or overlying graft. To remove a graft requires an open exploration, removal of tacks or sutures, then direct removal of the graft. Can be difficult.  Good luck.

Mesh: In this day and age, mesh is considered far superior to non-mesh repairs, and the primary reason is recurrence rates.  The recurrence rates with mesh repair are much lower than without mesh.

Maybe, but...: The most difficult complication of groin hernia repair to manage is chronic postherniorrhaphy pain, defined as persistent groin pain that lasts &gt; 3 - 6 months after hernia repair. It occurs in up to 10% - 12%. The cause may be related to nerve injury/entrapment, scar tissue formation, or reaction to the prosthetic material. It is important to exclude hernia recurrence before making this dianosis.

Doubt it: If this repair is several months old and the healing complete the mesh should be anchored well into the tissues so you kick should not dislodge the mesh

: Use of mesh is standard in repair of inguinal hernias resulting in less operative time and faster recovery as well as much less recurrence of hernia. Of course no one can completely promise no complications of mesh use. If you're not obese and want to avoid use of mesh, be prepared for a more painful procedure and a much longer time to full activities.

Yes: Many surgical reports for many years have documented hernia mesh safety & several reports indicate better long term hernia repair results with the use of mesh.

"trauma": Most types of hernia mesh are designed to scar into the adjacent tissue. Therefore, it can be quite traumatic to remove mesh, and even more difficult to (re)repair the hernia w/o mesh. Ironically, if the mesh is infected, it tends to come out quite easily.

i'm a 22y male, 67kg. recently i had a mesh repair for my inguinal hernia. after 13 days of the operation, the wound gets swelled. is that normal?

Likely: There is usually some resolving hematoma and fluid around the surgical site and the mesh.
