Hard work: Mesh placed for a hernia repair may need to be removed , either for infection, intractable post op pain of an extended period, or for hernia recurrence. In the latter, the graft should be left in place , and repaired with another adjacent or overlying graft. To remove a graft requires an open exploration, removal of tacks or sutures, then direct removal of the graft. Can be difficult. Good luck.

Depends on placement: Mesh can be placed laparoscopically or by open technique. Mesh removal is usually a much bigger operation. It requires alot more dissection, alot more trauma and may involve other organs the the mesh has eroded into. In addition once it is removed the defect left behind must still be repaired, usually with ansorbable mesh.
