i was diagnosed with hashimoto's thyroiditis 1.5 years ago. i am taking euthyrox (75mcg) for it. in the last week my thyroid has been extremely inflammed and i am struggling to breath and feel uncomforatable. what can i do to reduce this inflammation?

Go to your doc: If it is inflamed it may be a recurrence of the thyroiditis and you may need prescription meds to manage it. Contact your treating doc without delay &amp; follow their instructions.

Inflammation : Inflammation does not always cause pain, particularly when you're referring to the thyroid and hashimoto's. Some thyroiditis can be painful, but most is not or the symptoms are very minor and thought to be a cold, flu or sore throat.

Yes...: Most common presentation before overt hormone alteration related symptoms. Take aspirin when it hurts it will help.

can a person have post partum thyroiditis if they do not have a thyroid? how long after a levo increase does it take for a person to feel better?

Accepted Answer

Thyroid: Everyone has a thyroid gland unless has been surgically removed.  Post partum thyroiditis indicates inflammation. Blood testing of thyroid hormone levels is important.  It takes about 10 days to feel better after a change in dose of levothyroxine.

Great question: I looked up pathophysiology of hashimotos and it states that its poorly understood.  Maybe a pathologist can help answering this question.  My guess would be the thyroid gland tries to build more hormones to compensate for the loss.  At first it wins the battle, but eventualy theres too many antibodies so it gets "burnt out".

i have hashimoto's thyroiditis with 2 nodules on my thyroid and had a sudden drop in vitamin d- what's going on?

No need for panic: Small thyroid nodules is frequently encountered in people with hashimotos. These nodules seem to be small and of no clinical significance unless size is greater than 1 CM and/or worrisome findings per radiologist. Drop in vitamin d is not related but is certainltly of importance and i'm glad you were screened for. Your sun exposure is likely inadequate and depending on levels you may need suppleme.

i am waiting to go for tests to confirm if i have thyroid disease or what. im suspecting it might be from covid. if covid caused thyroiditis back in march/april when i recovered from covid. would thyroid decrease in size without treatment?

: The thyroid may be enlarged by inflammation as in thyroiditis and it could decrease in size with the resolution of the inflammation and that could happen with the immunity of the body without outside interference. However there is thyroid enlargement for other reseaons like in cancer of gandular enlargement when the thyroid is stimulated to for different reasons.

what percent of thyroid patients, develop iodine contrast-induced thyroid dysfunction? for example, i have diffusely enlarged thyroid/thyroiditis, but i am not being treated with medicine, what are my odds of having problems from iodine contrast?

: The incidence depends on the underlying abnormality with your thyroid (is it just a goiter that is not active? ie, a euthyroid goiter? or is it hyperactive still?  if so, this portends to higher risk of dysfunction. Number needed to harm: 23 for inciting hyperthyroidism. Pts with euthyroid goiter have almost 5x higher risk of ICM-induced TD than patients without thyroid nodules.

i have hashimoto's thyroiditis and want to have a baby. what are the chances my baby will be born with a thyroid disorder?

Unlikely if treated: Among the most common complications arising from overt hypothyroidism during pregnancy are preeclampsia/hypertension, placental rupture, preterm delivery with low birth weight, postpartum hemorrhage, and physical/neurological/psychological problems for the child.  Babies born to women with "untreated hypothyroidism" due to hashimoto’s disease may have a higher risk of birth defects.

i have acute thyroiditis , all thyroid levels&blood tests are perfect.however i have some pain in my right and left sides und my ribs, is this related?

Accepted Answer

No: I am going to assume that your thyrioditis is de Quervain's subacute granulomatous thyroiditis. This almost always goes away without causing much trouble. Rib pain's a different story, and if it is in the center of your chest, is crushing, prevents you from sleeping or doing the other things you enjoy, or takes your breath away, a phyiscian's office visit is in order.
