hello i had an infected cut like 1/2 months ago and i wash it and put medicine on it and it went away by itself but what im concerned about is that the area turn black is that normal because im brown will it go back to my skin color?

: It is not uncommon to have increased pigmentation in an area of inflammation. It will go back to the background color, but it often takes a long time, up to years. However, it is better to let nature take its course as interfering with it runs the risk of making it worse.

this is 3rd day taking cephalexin for a wound infection on right leg near calf. i still have throbbing pain, and inflammation. it does look like its healing tho as the gray in the middle is dissapearing. how long will pain last?

: You don't mention what started the infection. If  tissues are inflamed or if there is trapped pus, there will be pain and tenderness.  If there's redness, swelling,tension.or tenderness the wound may need incision and drainage of pus. See a physician as needed or especially if not gradually improving.

What is the source?: I you have an infection from the organism that ticks carry (babesia protozoa), you need much different treatment.  If you have a secondary skin infection due to  bacterial contamination of the wound, it depends on the type.  Also, you would need the proper dose and duration of antibiotic.  This is best determined by a physician who can distinguish the source and prescribe properly.

Yes: Yes. As long as you do not have an allergy to it or penicilin. One cap three times a day and call your dentist.

Accepted Answer

Take it out!: Any foreign body will make it very difficult for your body to get rid of the infection.  You need to remove any piercing hardware, allow the infection to heal, and then consider how badly you want a piercing there.  Often the infection will heal without cephalexin once the hardware is out, but may need cephalexin (or other antibiotic if resistant staph germ) if it's been infected awhile.

yesterday, i went to the er for my infected tounge piercing, i took it out and tested positive for strep.they gave me a penicillin shot.today i have fever, congestion and a bad cough.should i go back to the er?also, i have cephalexin 500mg in my home?

: Complete the course of PCN, but if you have difficulty breathing, fever or worsening cough, please see urgent care or your PCP.
Watch for signs of shortness of breath, blood in sputum and green nasal discharge with fever. Observe the site on your tongue for signs of infection including increased redness, swelling and drainage. While on the antibiotic, no fever should be observed after 48 hours.

my 5yr old is taking cephalexin for infected bee sting. dose is 8.5ml, it seems like a lot?

Doses are...: Calculated by weight, not age.  If you are concerned your child has been dosed too much, ask your doctor to double check.  S/he should be able to reassure you.

can i give my 5 yr old benadryl (diphenhydramine) with the antibiotic cephalexin? bee sting got infected

Yes: Benedryl is a bit sedating to some but it is well tolerated by most 5yo in that setting. Dosing is up to  1 tsp (5cc) per 25 lb up to every 6 hrs.  You can control the discomfort or swelling more naturally by using cold compresses. Wet a face cloth & place it in a ziploc bag & chill in the freezer. Or crush a few ice cubes into the same face cloth , ziploc it & you have easy compress for use.
